Back Pain

I've got this lower back pain. It's been hurting me for about a week, but the past few days it has been getting worse at night. It seems as the sun goes down, the pain intensifies to under my shoulder blades. Last night, I was almost in tears. I slept on the heating pad, and that helped a bit. I took Advil today to get some relief. I'm not sure what I've done. The shoulder blade pain seems worse about an hour after I run. I'm taking tonight off from running since I've had two good runs the past two days.

Maybe I should start alternating days with my runs. Taking more days off??? I've also been suffering with leg cramps in the middle of the night. Do you think that shoulder blade pain is stress?

Anyone have any advice here????

****On a side note, I had a WONDERFUL anniversary weekend. We had the "honeymoon" package while we were away. Cute, huh! And, the best part of all...I indulged just the right amount on my food choices. I didn't gain any weight. This morning, I weighed exactly the same as I did at my last weigh in. I am so proud of myself. Ieven had dessert and bread, but I tried to make delicious and HEALTHY decisions. That's what I am loving about Weight Watchers. I am learning how to enjoy those types of foods in MODERATION. A word that did not exist in my vocabulary in my past. I would either eat it all or deprive myself. I'm learning how to eat normally. This is working for ME, and I am so thankful! I don't expect a huge loss this week due to all the celebrating (my daughter's b-day is also this week), but I am happy to maintain. Thanks for all the well-wishes! You guys are the best!

Updates...

This has been a great week! Just a few little updates.

I celebrated my 10 year anniversary with my Fabulous Husband! We have a fabulous weekend planned (alone) to celebrate. We are going back to the spot where we got engaged and staying at a very "swanky" hotel for the weekend! :) We took our girls out to celebrate last night with us. They are so cute about it. They may become true romantics. They love watching their Daddy give me roses and love me. He told them the story of his proposal...they LOVED it! Needless to say, they are planning their weddings.

I officially lost 5 pounds on Weight Watchers. (Been at it for 2 weeks.) Woohoo! Even though I would love for the weight to drip off, I am happy with that.

When I first started this blog, I weighed 198. Now, I weigh 183. I feel like I will be in the 170s so soon. I am excited about this!!!! :)

I have started the C25K program on my treadmill. I think it is helping. I have taken the past 2 nights off to celebrate...that's life, right?

Yesterday, I was able to take my pants off without unbuttoning them! Can you believe that!

Oh, you have to try this yogurt...
This is the Fiber One Key Lime Pie Yogurt. It is only one point for WW. It is AWESOME!!!!!!! It is like a dessert. Give it a try if you like KLP.

I won't be able to check in until Sunday or Monday.

Have a great weekend.

An injury and an old soul

I've always been an "old soul." I'm not exactly sure when that started, but I think it was around the time I was injured. I was 10 at the time of my accident. In the hospital for a few months. Had to start 5th grade in a wheel chair. That was the pits.

The following year, my family moved to a larger city so that I could be closer to big hospitals with good doctors who could "fix" my leg. I just wanted to be a normal kid that could walk. When you almost die at 10, you aren't really 10 anymore. You grow up fast. I had surgery every summer, every Christmas break, many spring breaks, and other times every year until I was 18. That's a lot of surgeries. Too many to keep track of. Lots of crutches. Lots of ace bandages. Lots of special treatment (that I did not want) at school. I hated to have attention on me. I didn't get to play sports, ride a bike, etc like my friends. It's a miracle that my mom ever let me out of her sight.

I remember taking part in my friends' discussions, but inside I always thought it was so silly. I always felt so OLD. I knew about things that kids shouldn't. Don't get me wrong. If you visit a children's hospital, you know that there is always someone worse off than you. I knew I was fortunate. I knew God has saved me, and I was blessed with opportunites. But, it doesn't change the fact that it was tough.

I was told I'd lose my leg. I didn't.
I was told I may never walk again. I do.
I was told I could forget running. I do.
I was told I wouldn't hop, skip, etc. I do.

I am a miracle, really. God helped me prove those people wrong. There is very little wrong with my leg. It gives me a few problems now and then but with 1/3 of my calf-muscle and some scars, I do pretty well considering.

I'm not really sure why I'm writing about this. It may or may not relate to my weight. I have a few theories on that. I wasn't ever overweight as a child, but the fast food "fix" definitely started with so many hospital visits. The periods of being inactive for SO LONG didn't help me either, I'm sure. I got so much attention for something that I wouldn't wish on anyone. Maybe the emotional eating started here...???

This was just on my mind tonight. Thanks for listening.

Brutal Honesty

When is brutal honesty okay?

with your spouse? best friend? siblings? fellow bloggers?

Do people *really* want to hear THE TRUTH?

Don't we all really know the truth most of the time anyway? If we are overweight, we know it. If we've fallen off the diet wagon, we know it. If we are dating a loser, we know it. If we are spending money out of control, we know it. You get my point.

Does it help to bring "it" to people's attention?

I am very sensitive about my weight. I can't help it. I have to tell my husband not to remind me about my workouts b/c I think he is telling me to workout b/c I'm fat. I KNOW...it's crazy. He has never complained about my size. Even at my heaviest. I know I am just ultra-sensitive. I've warned him. He's very aware and cautious! It never helped me when my mother-in-law kindly brought my overweight-ness to my attention. I never appreciated her brutal honesty. Of course, she never did it in a kind way either (in my opinion).

I guess there is  a right way and a wrong way to be brutally honest!!!??

I am not sensitive about work. I like constructive criticism. I want to get better at what I do. Fire away with your honesty in that department.

How do we know when to tell people what we really think?

My friend Cindy has completely fallen off the diet wagon. I mean...fallen off!!! I'm not sayin a word!

My sister is dating a loser. I'm not sayin a word!

I avoid confrontation at ALL COSTS.

Do you believe in brutal honesty?

Tell me about your experiences...

Award Day!

I feel like such a lucky girl. I've been given TWO awards! Both awards were the

It was given to me by Jess over at See How She Runs and Debbie at Becoming An Ex Yo-Yo Dieter! Thank you Debbie and Jess!!!! Both of these ladies have awesome blogs. Check them out.

The rules for this award are simple:

  • Post and link back to the person who awarded you this award! (see above)
  • Share 7 things about yourself!
  • Award 5 bloggers who have "Stylish" blogs!

Seven Things about Me:
1. I am extremely organized at work. My closet is full of plastic tubs that have been labeled with my label maker. My drawers are perfect. Martha Stewart would be proud. However, my home is not that way. We have two junk drawers in our kitchen...beware! My guest bedroom closet has become the collection free-for-all. I really need to get my act together!

2. I love to paint my fingernails and toenails. But, I cannot stand to have even one tiny chip in the polish. Even if my nails are painted clear. For this reason, my nails usually stay natural (and I really don't have the time for manicured nails). Chipped polish drives me bonkers for some unknown reason.

3.  I love to sing really loud to the radio in the car when I am riding by myself. I crank it up and belt out the tunes! Just like I did when I was a teenager! =)

4. I love to dance...especially to songs with a good beat. Even if I've never heard the song before.

5. I can't believe I'm going to admit this, but I have become addicted to this season of The Bachelor! AGH! I know, it's terrible!

6. My favorite book (other than the Bible) of all time is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. If you haven't read it, you must!!!!!! This book is heartwarming and you can learn so much from it!

7. I can't stand to look at loose teeth. I think I could stitch up cuts in children, fix broken bones, and perform CPR...but I cannot pull teeth! It freaks me out. When I taught kindergarten, it was definitely an occupational hazard. Now, my husband handles all teeth issues with our girls! Thank goodness.

I bestow this Stylish Blogger Award to:
Thank you again to Debbie and Jess. I really appreciate the award! I hope you all have a great weekend!

21 Days...

My post has 3 points (sorry to bore you...feel free to skip parts!):

1. Okay...first things first.

Today was my weigh in day. It has been 21 days of no scale. 21 days of making new healthy habits. 21 days without Diet Coke. 21 Days of becoming a runner. Now before I tell you my results, let me start by saying that the hard part about today was that I don't really know my starting weight because my scale was broken. I hadn't counted on that part of it. :( But I know I was somewhere between 190-194. I hate typing that.

Today, I was 184!!!!!!!!!!! I am very happy about that!!! I am going to make Fridays my weigh in days. I think it will be good for me. So, I am not totally sure exactly how much I have lost, but I guess that part doesn't matter. I know where I am heading. That is down on the scale!

I feel so much better too. I am starting to get compliments. I know it is vain, but it feels so good that people can tell.

I think drinking water has helped my skin so much. I don't look as bloated, and I don't feel so dry. I think my hair is even healthier. Why did I wait so long to ditch the Diet Coke?

2.In response to my previous post...
I think I hit a nerve with some of you. It did me too. It has taken me a couple of days, but my husband pointed out that weight is personal. It is their choice how to handle their bodies. The sister who just had a baby...I get her position. The sister who is SO fit...I don't understand it, but maybe I don't need to. She's been through a lot this year. Maybe she wanted to do something with the other two of us? She definitely doesn't take WW as serious as we do. They both blew through their points at dinner last night like it was no big deal. And you know what, it wasn't. That's the beauty of it for them. It is not a big deal to them. I am now at a place where I can just laugh at my skinny WW sisters. I think I was most upset about it because if they thought they needed WW, what must they think of me? I had turned their choices about themselves into something about me...

Many of you were right. This is my journey. I am on a good path right now. I don't want to focus on negative. You know who were my three biggest cheerleaders today? My husband and my sisters. (I'm sure my mom would have too if she had known.) I know they know they are fine in the weight department. Maybe they are just tweaking a few things. I can't worry about it...that I do know.

Leah, to answer your question---I asked the skinniest sister the same question you did!!! I couldn't believe WW even allowed her to register. (We are doing this online.) I figured she didn't have enough weight to lose to join. Now, it wouldn't let her set her goal as low as she wanted it. But she swears, she has 10 pounds to lose and it let her join! I don't know. She doesn't look like it to me. Anyone in a size 4 shouldn't have 10 pounds to lose in my opinion. But, I do think our sizes are messed up nowadays. Can a size 00 even exist? The lady across the hall at work wears that!

I'm just going to worry about my weight loss. That's a hard enough job!

3. WW...
I am well aware that I am on a diet. But this is different than anything I have ever done before. I have been on liquid diets, low-carb diets, etc. etc. etc. What I like about WW is that I am learning that I don't have to eliminate "things" from my diet to lose weight. Tonight, I enjoyed pizza with my family. I added up the points and planned my day around it. I have been exercising daily, too. I have one day off a week, but I know days will come when I can't do it and that's okay. I am learning that I can enjoy all types of foods and still lose weight. Now, the diet part is that I am counting points and having to stay under a number. But, I know with time, I will learn to do this naturally. I am retraining my brain, I think. Before, I felt like I had to eat everything I could see before I started a diet. Then, the deprivation would begin until I couldn't stand it any longer. Now, I know one day at a time. I can have something today. Another day will come for another treat. I don't have to eat the whole kit and kaboodle today.

The two weeks when I was "dieting" before WW (when the scale was broken), I thought I was eating so well. Now, looking back and judging by the points, I was really overeating. I don't think I knew enough about food. I thought I did, but no. I am learning so much.

It is so important to find what clicks for you. Each of us are different and respond to different things. I am thankful that this is working for me. I hope I continue to experience success. It has been a great week. :)
Thanks for cheering me on.

Hip, hip, hooray!

Skinny Sisters

Well...
I think I might be too good of a salesperson for Weight Watchers. I was talking about how much *fun* I am having with WW with my sisters. Who-are-skinny! They decided they liked what I was saying SO much, that they wanted to join.

ummm....

did you see what I said about the skinny part???

I'm not sure what to think about this.

Weight loss has always been MY thing. Sounds silly, I know.

Here's the deal.

Sister A is beautiful and she just had a baby. She only has 15 pounds to lose to get back into her size 4 pants. Now, don't get me wrong. I know those pounds are important to her. I support her in losing them. Totally, completely. It is important to get back into your pre-baby clothes. I understand she can't afford a whole new wardrobe. I know she wants to weigh her "old" weight. I'm cheering for her. I promise. But, she is consumed with having at least 12 points left over at the end of the day... this bothers me for some odd reason. She's nursing---she needs to eat!

Sister B...is like a model. Not lying here. She is beautiful. Tall. Skinny. Long, flowing, perfect hair. The package. Men break their necks to get a look at her wherever we go. It is amusing. She is fit and thin. Runs 6 miles a day. What the heck is she doing WW for???? She's obsessed with the apps on her phone even tho she has trouble staying under her points. She works out so much she HAS to eat. I'm not sure if she is aiming for a size 0 or what...I guess this bothers me b/c I want her to know how wonderful she is NOW.

I'm just trying to think of it as a team. We're all supporting one another. We are backing each other up.

I WILL NOT COMPARE MYSELF TO THEM.
I WILL NOT COMPARE MYSELF TO THEM.
I WILL NOT COMPARE MYSELF TO THEM.

Can you remind me of this if I need to be told this 100,000 times???

Maybe I should go work for WW. If I can sell this program to two ladies who wear smaller than a size 6...I should be able to sell it to anyone! AND, I wasn't even trying to get them to join! A-MA-ZING!

I'm not sure what the purpose of this post is. A little venting...rambling. A little frustration that women are seldom happy with themselves even when they appear to be "just right." (I know that is MY opinion.) Maybe I am jealous that they are already the size I wish to be? Maybe I am worried I won't ever be satisfied with me? (Lord, I pray not.)

Anyway...thanks for reading.

No matter what, it will be nice to share recipes low in points, right?

Don't forget to eat fruits and vegetables!

She quit on me!

Just a quick update.

Cindy quit on me! Can you believe it? Don't worry about me...I'm laughing about it. She will return--I just know it. She always does. She lost 6 pounds and gained it all back this weekend! I'm going to get her! She said she will still run the race with me in February. I sure hope so. I am counting on her.

I am still running daily. I take Fridays off, but other than that I am very consistent. I am pleased that I am able to run further and faster. I am doing very well with the Weight Watchers points, too. It is almost like a game to me. I never thought I would say that I like it! I am usually 5 or so under. :) I haven't used any Plus points or Activity points at all. I have discovered new foods that are filling and satisfy me! Something has clicked inside of me. I am excited for the first time in ages (about weight loss).

I am supposed to weigh on the 21st. I can't wait to see if this hard work is paying off.

Sorry for the boring post. Not much time! :)

Hope you are doing well.

Fartlek isn't a bad word

Fartleks! Who knew it was a real word? I guess you serious runners did. Newbies like me, not so much! For those of you just tuning in...fartleks are short bursts of speed until you slow down again. Thank you to those of you who left comments about this in my previous post! I never thought I'd be excited to learn about running, but I AM!

So...I've tried this in my past two sessions! I'm loving it, and I think it is helping. Of course, I have no idea what I'm doing so I am totally winging it. If anyone knows the right or wrong way to fartlek, please let me know immediately. I may look up some workout plans online or get some from friends.

AND, I'm sorry...but the word totally cracks me up! Who named it that? and why? (Just kidding, I looked it up. It means "speed play" in Swedish, and a Swedish coach first used it as a type of exercise. You learn something new everyday!)

Ok, back to seriousness.  Here's how my runs go. I do a warm-up lap for 1/4 mile. I get faster walking on that as I go. Then, on the second 1/4, I jog at my comfy speed. The on the third quarter 1/4 mile, I fartlek (see, it's funny). I keep alternating as long as I can. After mile 2, I couldn't fartlek a whole 1/4 mile at top speed so I would make deals with myself in time. (I'm doing this on a treadmill.) What do you think of this? I really want to know.

Now, for my Weight Watchers update. I am really digging this. I always thought I would HATE this whole points thing. Nope.  I Love it. Who knew? I was eating way more than I should've been those first 15 days of dieting...woops! I've gotta feeling that this may work for me. :) Woot Woot!

Thanks for all your helpful feedback.

You guys are awesome!

Question of the Day...Need advice

I'm trying to become a runner. I'm enjoying the process...truly I am. I can run almost the entire 3 miles now. Yay!

But here's my question...

Should I be working on upping my speed or shoot for a longer distance?

I can go longer if I run slower. If I up my speed, I can't run as long. I have to start walking. Which is more important?

I usually exercise 45-60 minutes. I take one day off a week. I try to do one intense day followed by a lighter day. I have no idea if this is good or not. Hey, at least it is exercise.

I want your opinions...Let me hear from you! :)

Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I joined Weight Watchers. I am so excited about it!!!! I will be giving you updates. :) You get a deal right now if you want to join, too!

Still in my groove,

Favorite Finds Friday!

My bloggy friend Kerri has a great idea.

Favorite Finds Friday!!!!!!!

Kerri's blog is The Pleasures of My Life. And it is wonderfully awesome! You have to check it out. I feel a kinship with her. I'm sure we would be terrific friends if we were neighbors or something. Anyway, her idea is that we all (bloggers) share things we have found that we like.

This is what Kerri said...

Wouldn't it be fun to see what other people are buying and enjoying?!
I love when other bloggers recommend things they have tried and loved.

I completely agree with her. Don't you?

Here are my newest

Favorite Finds

My first two go together...

I really like Clinique's line of Even Better moisturizer and dark spot corrector. It is supposed to even out your skin. Now, I don't have really bad spots. But I developed a new sun spot (I guess) on the outer corner of my cheek this year. I think the corrector has definitely helped! And, I *really* like the moisturizer. If feels so good. The stuff is expensive for me. I asked for it for my birthday/Christmas presents from my mom. :) I am not sure if I can spoil myself like this...we'll see.

These are my *new* running shoes. Asics Gel Nimbus 12. They are fabulous. They were rated #1 in my Fitness Magazine for Women "neutral runners"....I guess that's what I am??? They were a bit of a splurge for me. However, I saved about $35 dollars with online deals and free shipping. You just have to search. I have discovered that if you are serious about running, you don't want to skimp on gear for the feet. Taking care of those babies is key! I don't regret the purchase at all. I got dark shoes for the winter running. Who knows what I'm talking about? I just thought it sounded good, and a little stylish...?

These are my new running pants, but they are actually Old Navy Yoga Pants. I got them on sale for $15. I bought the XL because they are meant to be skin tight, but I'm not a big fan of skin tight. I try not to show off my cellulite (I don't want to make anyone jealous w/ how much of it I have), if you know what I mean. These are just tight enough not to rub me when I run. My husband thinks they are pretty cute, too. ;) And, I think they look good with my new shoes! I probably wouldn't wear them out in public...too self-conscious, but my husband says it would perfectly fine if I wanted to. I'm not sure if he is just being nice. I'll ask my sister next time she visits.

I am sure Baby Spinach is not new to many of you. But, I have just discovered it. AND I LOVE IT. I may have traded my Diet Coke addiction for Baby Spinach. I have been putting it in wraps, salads, and smoothies. And, bonus...I have even gotten my kids to eat it. You can't really taste it when you mix it in--I promise. Green fruit smoothies just taste fruity not spinachy! We had grilled chicken, onion, spinach fajitas. Turkey/spinach, cranberry on whole wheat wraps! YUM! Delicious!

This is my new favorite breakfast to make. You can guess...it is with BABY SPINACH. I scrambled 2 eggs (1 with only whites). Mixed in a little mozella cheese. Broke up one piece of turkey bacon. Mixed in a handful of spinach until it was all hot in the pan. Put it on a whole wheat wrap. Both of my girls LOVED it, too. My youngest is very picky and won't even touch most vegetables. Once I promised her it wasn't lettuce (well, it's not), she took her first bite. She likes it!!!! We are loving this! A half of the wrap is perfect for me (with a grapefruit), and the other half for one daughter. My husband eats a whole plus another half. :)

I hope you join me and Kerri on the Favorite Finds Friday!!!

No Fair to Compare

I've posted on this before, and I've seen many of you post on it as well.

I think we women are really bad about comparing ourselves to other women. But, we don't take into account that we are *completely* different from the women we comparing ourselves to! It's like comparing a circle to a square! An apple to an orange! The ocean to the mountains! It's crazy! They are both wonderful...made to be just what they are...why compare?

When I was in high school, my best friend was a tiny little petite girl. She was under 5 feet tall. Tiny body, tiny feet, tiny hands. Little bitty thing. Her name was Sandy. Isn't that perfect? Everyone loved to pick her up. She was like a little doll.

I felt SO HUGE. I was 5'7". I wore a size 7 pant. I wore a size 8 shoe. There was nothing tiny about me. I wanted to be like Sandy. However, there wasn't anything I could do about it...Oh, I tried starving a few times, but I couldn't shrink! It is sad to think back on it. There was nothing fair about comparing myself to her. God made us totally, completely different!!!!!!!!!! Sandy always wanted to be tall, I always wanted to be little. Oh, my.

Now, that is definitely typical of teenagers. But, admit it. We do this as adults, too. We just might not admit it out loud. Is my butt as big as hers? Are my thighs as firm as hers? Do I have as much cellulite as she does? Is my hair as frizzy as hers? Is my skin as smooth as hers?Do I have as many wrinkles as she does? Does my outfit look as great as hers does? etc, etc, etc

Last Sunday, another friend of mine called me. She has been through the loop in the last two years. She battled breat cancer. She lost both breasts, but she beat cancer. What a warrior! Now, they have found suspicious cells in her uterous. She will be having a hysterectomy. On the phone, she said that she will no longer be a woman. I asked if the situation was reversed and it was me, would she think that I wasn't a woman anymore? Of course, she said no way! I said, well, why would you say that to yourself?

We all know the answer. WE ARE THE HARDEST ON OURSELVES!!!!

Why is this?

We say things to ourselves that we would never say to anyone else. AND, we believe them!

Just to finish the story, we finally agreed that our "parts" don't make us real women...our hearts do. And my friend has the heart of an angel! She will be fine. But, the truth is: She can't compare herself to someone who hasn't fought the same battle as she has. It isn't fair to herself.

Just like you can't.

Just like I can't.

It isn't fair.

I'm starting the "NO FAIR to Compare" Campaign.

Let's stop. I want to embrace ourselves. Let's love ourselves!

We can do it.

Fear of Judgment

Why do I worry about the judgment of others regarding my weight and weight loss?

I'm not really sure. I am 36 years old, and I know I should be well beyond caring what others think of my appearance. I should be self-assured. I should be self-confident. I should focus on God's love for me and my family's love for me; I don't want to care what others think about the extra weight I carry around.

AND, does anyone care what I weigh?

I would venture to say that MOST people in my life don't care. My mother-in-law does. She has made it clear. But the others? Maybe not. I am sure that judgment does come from some...maybe even from people I don't know. However, I think I am starting to realize that some of it is in my head. It is the voice in my head that says I am too fat to wear ________. ...too fat to do _______. ...too fat to ________.  I am the one who has put limits on myself. No one else has done this to me. I am holding myself back.

I am insecure.

I have let the pounds dictate my behavior.

If you knew me, you would NEVER guess this about me though. I think I hide it very well. I am successful, happy, involved,  and I am almost sure I do not seem insecure. In fact, I confessed this to the ladies in the office the other day. I told them to read So Long Insecurity and they asked what in the world I had read that book for! BUT, that book was written for people like me.

Maybe a few of you noticed that for a few days, I had my *real* picture up on this blog. I couldn't do it though. I worried about it. I worried that someone would recognize me. I worried that someone from my  real life would see me. See my inner thoughts, see my weight battle, see my weight postings, see my struggles, see my successes/failures and they might "out me." I want this to be mine. I know this fear is unrealistic. I keep telling myself that I will put my picture up someday. When is this for me? I'm not sure. Goal weight? Half-way there? I know this is all from my insecurity...I fear judgment from others...not from you. From someone I know. Someone who might discover me and my blog.

I am working on realizing that there is NOTHING wrong with trying to improve myself and using this blog to do it. There is nothing wrong with trying and failing. Nothing wrong with learning from that, getting up and dusting yourself off, and trying again. Nothing wrong with having support on a blog from people who can help and encourage you along the way.

It is no secret that I am carrying extra weight. EVERYONE can see it. Why am I scared to write down a number? It is what it is. The number does not change how I look or who I am or how I feel.

I am working on me.

I hope you stick with me.

A Scaley Revelation

I think I've had a revelation....

My friend Cindy weighed. EVEN though we promised each other we wouldn't weigh until January 21. Actually she made ME promise and then we made a pact. She has broken the pact, and my scale is still broken.

Cindy has lost 5 pounds while I am still trying to decide if I am going to wait it out.

I am dying to know if what I am doing is working.

Here's the revelation. WHY do I need the scale to tell me what I am doing is working???

Here's what I know.
  • I feel better than I have in a LONG time. I am so motivated. I am on "my path...the journey for me."
  • I am Diet Coke free. How can that be wrong? I am water-logged!
  • I am eating healthy foods. Whole grain, spinach, fruits, veggies, turkey, etc, etc, etc.
  • I am exercising daily!!!! My muscles will vouch for me.
  • My clothes are fitting well. Some are even a little baggy.
  • My husband says he can tell a difference even though it has only been 13 days. The other night he said my skin was glowing. Awww...he's a sweetie.
  • Someone at church (who has NO IDEA what I've been doing) asked me if I had lost weight.
  • I am feeling successful.
Doesn't this plan sound like it is working to you?

Why do I need a scale? What if I got on it and I haven't lost? Would I get frustrated and quit? I'm not sure I could handle it...honestly. Maybe I'll just stick with my plan and wait until the 21st. Maybe the broken scale was the best thing for me. Maybe I need that amount of time to develop good habits/new habits. And, that time will allow me to feel secure in my new self rather than be so dependent on the number that I see.

I haven't told anyone besides my husband and Cindy that I am on this journey AGAIN. I just didn't want to see the look in their eyes...you know, them thinking that here I go again. Success/Failure/Success/Failure. I don't want anyone waiting to see how long it takes me to quit again. I just want them to discover my success.

This journey is mine.

Who needs the scale?

J

PS---Just so you know...I'm not totally giving up the scale! I will have to check in with the naughty device eventually! :) I'm curious like that.

Friend Makin' Monday: Resolutions

So, it is Friend Makin' Monday. Kenz over at All the Weigh is asking a question about resolutions in 2011. Feel free to link up with her and join us. It is a great way to establish friendships in blogland! :)

Here we go:

Kenz wants to know...

Did you make any resolutions?  If so, what are they?  Have you stuck to them so far?

Yes, I have made several resolutions for 2011. I usually don't, but this year I am trying to become a better me. So...here they are:
  1. Totally give up Diet Coke. Yep, I've done it so far!!!!
  2. Exercise regularly. :) Going strong with this goal. Only missed one day in 2011 and it was on purpose. Gave myself a day off.
  3. Run 5k's. First scheduled one is on Feb. 20. Looking forward to it with BFF Cindy.
  4. Eat a healthy diet/lifestyle. Check!
  5. Take care of me in general. I put all others in my life first. I want to take care of myself this year.
I'll keep my list short. I want this year to be ONE of my best EVER!!!! I've got a feelin' it will be.

I'd love to hear your goals/resolutions! (and how you are doing with them!)

We are having a snow day today. Yippee!!!

Needing some Zzzzz's

Okay, here's the weird thing. I've been exercising EVERY day. I am Diet Coke FREE since Dec. 31. I only drink water. I'm eating healthier than I have in a very LONG time.

BUT...I cannot sleep!!!! I toss and turn. I never feel completely "out." I wake up about 1 am every night and lay there awhile. Is it because I am sore? Is it because I have gone back to work and I'm feeling stress?  Is is because I have to tinkle due to all the water I'm drinking? What is it????

I'm really not sure about the cause, to be honest.

I finally took 2 Simply Sleep pills (by Tylenol) the other night just to get some rest. Anybody got any ideas???

In other news, I am dying to see what I weigh. If my scale weren't broken, I would have caved and broken my 21 day rule. Cindy made me promise to wait to weigh until Jan. 21, but I am so eager to find out if all this is working. Well, I know it is working a little, my pants tell me that much. But, I want to see how well it is it working.

Also, the Diet Coke cravings are getting so much better...finally! :)

Now, on the running. My knees are sore. I may start running/walking every other day and do a video on the in between days. Use different muscles, you know. My knees are probably thinking "you want us to run with all the weight???" I like sore muscles...sore knees are another factor. I have also started a little handweight program of my own for my jiggly arms. Aren't you proud of me? I hope to be ready for sleeveless top weather!!! :)

I have also been counting calories. I have to be *really* honest with you friends. This totally gets on my nerves. I think I can look at portion sizes and control my diet. So far, I have been doing that and basically  I stay under my calorie limit EVERY DAY. So, what is the point of trying to write it all down? What are your opinions of portion control and making good, healthy choices??? Be honest with me!

Have a great Saturday!

100th Post!

This is my 100th post. It is really hard to believe. I wish I had a profound post to write. I am sorry if I disappoint you.

I am so thankful for all of you. I have found many blogger friends...many I am sure that I could be "real life" friends with. I love to find blogs that inspire me. AND, believe it or not, I don't just read *weight loss* blogs. I know, gasp!

Here, at the 100th post, I am pleased that I am at a good place. I am running...finally. I can now run 2 miles without stopping. That is big for me. I am Diet Coke FREE since Dec. 31 and feeling better about it with each passing day. I am a water drinker only, yippee!  My diet is the best its been in a long time. I feel like I have found my groove...

And it is about TIME. Thank goodness I found it by the 100th post! Right?!!!

Although, I am nowhere near where I had hoped to be, I am now on my way. I am determined. I have played around for the past few months, and I think I have found what is going to work for me. I sincerely appreciate your support, encouragement, honesty, advice, humor, prayers, etc. etc. etc....

You mean so much to me.

Here's to a 100 more posts!

I miss the FIZZ....

This is awful to admit!! But I think I was in LOVE with Diet Coke. I think I have broken up with DC. I think. I have been 4 days without DC. I think I am past the hard part. Oh, but I miss my beloved. ;)

I miss the fizz.....

I miss the taste. It was the perfect taste. Right after college, I decided to cut out *regular* Coke. I hated the taste of Diet Coke. So, I switched to Diet Mountain Dew. I could deal with that drink...it didn't taste so diety to me. After a couple months, I tried the Diet Coke. I liked it. The love affair/ addiction began. I felt like I could drink as many as I wanted. No calories. No guilt.

I went through periods where I would drink a glass of water for every DC consumed, but it never lasted.

Diet Coke goes perfectly with all kinds of great food. Mexican food, pizza, chips, even sweets such as fudge, peanut butter cookies....hmmm...maybe I see a pattern here.

There is a cheerleading coach at my school that makes girls like me green with envy (not really but a little...ha). She is about 50 years old, and has the body of a 20 year old. She is tiny in height and weight, she bounces when she walks, truly! She has lean muscles. Two years ago, I dropped 30 pounds (yes, and gained it back) but she came up to me to congratulate me. She said that I only needed to add strength training and kick my Diet Coke habit. She said Diet Coke causes belly fat. I just laughed quietly  and told her thanks for her advice.

I was pretty sure the DC wasn't causing my fat. I felt like my eating was. However, these days without it have me thinking. I sure related some good foods to drinking it. So maybe in a round about way, it was causing my fat.

Heck, I am dedicating an entire post to how much I miss it. I was addicted.  I guess I still am. I am fighting the addiction. But I am going to become a water addict. My skin will glow. I am flushing out toxins or whatever they say. I hope I don't cave (I was tempted yesterday...my MIL had a Diet Coke in her fridge that was open...and I thought...just one little sip won't hurt. BUT, I didn't do it!)

Goodbye Diet Coke, HELLO WATER!

H2Oing,
J

Friend Makin' Monday

I can't think of a better way to start off the new year than by making new bloggy friends. So, I am taking part in ShrinkingKenz's Friend Makin' Monday Fun!!! Go check out her blog. She's pretty awesome. You can link up with her, too, if you want to play along.

Her question of the day is:

How did you celebrate the new year? Details, please!

Well, I am very boring. So you can skip to the short update at the bottom if you want! Really. I admit it.  Boring! I would say that our celebrations actually started on the 31st with my family in the mountains. We ate, watched football and movies and --of course just had lots of fun with family. Then we drove home. We spent the night at home. The girls actually fell asleep before midnight. But my husband and I (I've got to come up with a good blog name for him) stayed up. We live out in the country so our neighbors were celebrating with a mix of fireworks and shotguns...no kidding! It's interesting. We have a very good mix down here.

On the first, we had lunch with some other relatives. Watched more football. AND, we cleaned out the house. We had bags of Christmas trash, BAGS and BAGS to donate to those less fortunate. It is a little embarrassing really. We tried to get rid of things we haven't worn or played with in a long time.

On Sunday, we went for our last celebratory meal. (Thank goodness, at this point, we are almost all tired of eating!) We had a wonderful church service and a nice afternoon. We go back to school tomorrow. Although I look forward to getting back to a routine, I am a bit sad about saying goodbye to being a temporary stay-at-home-mom. It was a fabulous two weeks!

On the diet/lifestyle front, things are going well! I haven't had a diet coke, can you believe it!!! (Kerri---thanks for your comment. I was thinking about you and your Mtn. Dews! :) Good luck to you! ) I am still running/walking, and I am still very sore! Ouch! So far, so good. Cindy is doing well, too! :)

Have a good day!

A sign from the scale?

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! I am very excited about 2011!!!! This is going to be a great year! I can feel it.

My scale was broken this morning. My husband couldn't fix it. We tried the battery, and everything else we could think of. Is this a sign??? :)

Do I focus too much on the number this "machine" tells me? Should I focus more on how my clothes fit? How I feel? Should I start with running and eating well? Then, weigh in a month or so?

I've been reading a few blogs of those who have lost like 100+ pounds. Needless to say, it is very impressive. There is one woman who has struck a chord with me. She started and for 21 days she exercised and ate REALLY well. It takes 21 days to start a *new* habit. I like that idea. We say that at my school during the first 21 days of the new school year. Sounds good to me.

I may leave the scale turned off for the first 21 days of 2011. What do you think of this?

I may not be able to stand it. I'm not sure.

I enjoyed my last Diet Coke yesterday....oh, my. I drank more water than I have in a long time.

I have run/walked for the past 3 days (over 3 miles each time). I got an early jump on that goal. I am loving it already.

My eating has been just okay...I am still in a bit of holiday mode. Our last "feast" is today. But, I know it will be back to routine on Monday so I am not worried.

I would love to hear your feedback on this...

What do you think of small changes for 21 days?
Not weighing for awhile?

Enjoy the first day of the NEW YEAR!!!

:) J
